New Mural is Coming Along Swimmingly

Each one of our grade two students created part of our latest mural. Hopefully by tomorrow the wall will be filled with turtles, sharks, seahorses, fish and shells. I can’t wait to see the mural completed.

Santa’s Little Helpers

Last Friday my room was looked like Santa’s workshop. Lots of little folks running around creating gingerbread and snowmen. Luckily, both the gingerbread and the snowmen are made out of clay so we don’t have to worry about cavities or melting. My grade five students love having their pre-K buddies visit.

Focusing on Eyes

All of my intermediate classes have been learning to draw eyes. Grade five is well underway with they Eye Print project, grade four will start working this week and, not wanting to feel left out, my grade three students asked if they could try their hand at drawing eyes too. Here is a look at what the kids were able to accomplish in just one lesson.

Tree of Life Projects

Recently my grade five students finished their “Tree of Life Project.” They started by making a clay coil pot and then ‘planting’ the wire tree scupltures in the pot. Then using found objects and shrinky dinks they decorated the trees with symbols of the things that are important to them. Take a look at just a few of the the trees and what the artists had to say about their work.

Tape Sculptures!

Things have been pretty sticky in the art room these days. My grade five students have been busy creating tape scupltures. Using wide cello packing tape, the kids created, bottles, shoes, cups and teapots. They also had to find a way to include themselves in the sculpture. So, somewhere inside each piece is a picture of the artist. Here is a look at the work from Mrs. Colvin’s class.

Making Movies in Art

A few days ago we read Nina Laden’ book When Pigasso Met Mootise. In the book Pigasso and Mootise turn their houses into giant works of art. We painted blocks inspired by the story. Then we used the blocks to create a stop motion movie. Check it out.
